Lead Data Scientist
SPEAKER PROFILE
My interest in the outdoors led me to study earth sciences and climate change at university in Coventry and Iceland. After a few years in data and geospatial consultancy roles I still had the itch for studying and so completed a PhD looking at the impact of climate change to critical infrastructure networks. In practice this meant analysing global scale climate data using a blend of catastrophe models, machine learning, and statistical methods. I joined Beazley, a large commercial insurer, in 2017 as one of Beazley's first Data Scientists. Over the past 5 years my focus has been two fold. First, to deliver strategic data science use cases that create value to the business. Secondly, to develop the enterprise data science and analytics capability in order to get the right blend of people and skills, processes, and technology for us to achieve our business goals. It's a great role as I get to work with lots of different people and on a variety of complex challenges. From cyber risk analytics for risk selection and underwriting decision support, to automated and natural language processing of submission and claims documents.
